A small article tucked away in the latest issue of excellent football magazine When Saturday Comes piqued my interest:
“The breakaway republic of Northern Cyprus is set to host the first ever world cup for nations that don’t exist…”
The Viva World Cup is being organized by the New Federation Board, a football body that claims to represent countries not currently recognized by the United Nations or, more importantly, by FIFA. The event is set to take place from November 19-25, 2006, and so far the following non-recognized states/peoples are scheduled to participate:
- Northern Cyprus (recognized only by Turkey)
- Somaliland (a breakaway state in east Africa)
- Kosovo
- Kurdistan
- Chechnya
- the Roma people (usually called Gypsies)
- Tibet
It remains to be seen whether winning this World Cup will raise the profile of the winner enough to get the U.N.’s attention.
More information on the NF Board and the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Association.

Good luck to Somaliland!

Good Luck to Sampi
A smaller event with only four teams was contested back in June 2005. The 1st UNPO Football Cup Tournament was contested between the South Moluccas, the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, Southern-Cameroon and West-Papua.
The NF-Board website, however, seems inaccessible, and I haven’t heard anything else about the event.
South Moluccas beat Chechnya 3-1 in the final. The second edition will be held in Spring of this year
Meanwhile, the VIVA World Cup will be played from 19th-25th November this year in Northern Cyprus, with 8 teams participating.
yeah we know the viva cup is here in this year but can anyone get into NF Board through website or email? Northern Cyprus are supposed to play Monaco, an NF Board member here in North Cyprus next week but Greeks have protested about this friendly for the usual reasons: Monaco is a recognised EU country. So now we will probably have to play Chechnya.
As other members here we are trying to get all these non-recognized countries together and it’s about time Greek Cyprus let North Cyprus play. They will be happy to take the tickets and glory to go to the finals when they happen but object when we want to play the amateurs of Monaco.
If anyone hears anything from the NF Board keep us updated here and finally if NF Board cannot give any information then they should not have formed in the first place.
Adding to the 7 teams to take part which is above on this page can anyone confirm if Monaco is the last team to go forward because I have heard that Jersey or the Isle of Wight will take part.
Good luck to all of them! The teams are really good.
Turkish Cypriots are fanatical about football, I should know, I am one! But I live in London and can see Premiership Games and International matches. Turkish Cypriots in North Cyprus cannot see, let alone play , any other national in the world which is not a member of UEFA or FIFA. The football emabrgoes against our nation are just one of a ridiculous range of restriction which include trade, travel, culture and sport. You won’t see Turkish Cypriot representation at the Commonwealth Games, the Olympic Games or any other sporting arena. That includes no youth matches, no children’s matches or friendlies.
This is a travesty. Even the friendly game against Monaco due to take place on 18 February 2006 was scuppered by Greek Cypriot pressure.
The Viva World Cup is one way of fighting back. Rest assured, Turkish Cypriots are getting the hang of lobbying and influencing the influencers. We love our football and we want to play….
I think it’s absolutely diabolical the way the greek cypriots have acted, it sickens me to this day, that they would act in such a jealous manner, to prevent us from having our HUMAN RIGHTS. To this day they have acted conniving and spiteful, and I think it’s about time they grow out of it, or they will be seen for their twofaced mannerisms by the rest of the world. They have deliberately sabotaged every piece of progress the turkish cypriots try to make, the embargoes are ridiculous and should be lifted. i am only 16 and have realised all of this through still experiencing it. They wish to treat us like second class citizens and I will be one to stand and fight for my human rights as a person in this world !!!
Hello, open the forum in Italiano, english, spanish, more lenguage in the page http://viva.forumup.com.mx

The Republic of Somaliland known as the Somaliland Protectorate under the British rule from 1884 until June, 26th 1960 when Somaliland got its independence from Britain. On July 1st 1960 it joined the former Italian Somalia to form the Somali Republic. The union did not work according to the aspirations of the people, and the strain led to a civil war from 1980s onwards and eventually to the collapse of the Somali Republic. After the collapse of the Somali Republic, the people of Somaliland held a congress in which it was decided to withdraw from the Union with Somalia and to reinstate Somaliland’s sovereignty.

Hello all, I’m a lover of football, and Irish at that! To correct Runner-up FIFI Wild Cup and his/her comments over the Wild Cup in Hamburg in June, the Republic of St. Pauli team were drawn from youth and veteran team members from FC Sankt-Pauli. The RSP team were only allowed to enter after some help from an advertising agency. FC Sankt-Pauli weren’t allowed to enter a team of their own as they are a DFB-registered club, and therefore under the auspices of FIFA.
Good luck to all of the teams entering in both versions of the alternative World Cup, be they in the Viva World Cup or in the LFE Cup. I hope that they will eventually see sense and organise a competition between themselves in a proper and mature manner, and stop the stupid squabbling. People who just want to play football should be alowed to do so without fear or favour.
I feel that Greenland and Gibraltar, to name but two, have been treated in a very underhand manner. I hope, again, that every nation/region/people involved shall have an enjoyable tournament, and, also that FIFA see sense and stop being so dictatorial..
this a good oppoutuniuy for the unrecognise country to make mark on football pitch. good luck to all the teams particibating in this competition, personlly i would like somaliland to win i have visited somliland last year people there were realy good i hope they get recognise and win this competition

Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is currently hosting the ELF Cup, since the sides couldn’t agree on the VIVA World Cup. Here’s the link:
http://www.elfcup.org/
And here’s detailed info on the ELF Cup:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ELF_Cup
The tournament is being played out between Crimea, Gǎgǎuzia, Greenland, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Tibet, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, and Zanzibar; and played through November 19th, 2006 - November 25th, 2006.
In the opening day, TRNC defeated Crimea 5-0, Tajikistan beat Tibet 3-0, Zanzibar beat Kyrgyzstan 1-0 and Greenland beat Gǎgǎuzia 2-0.
why arnt the sami team in it they have great players like Jonas Jonhansen and Jo Nymo Matland of tromso.
Well, it appears that the four-team tournament was reduced to three after the team from South Cameroon ran into visa trouble and didn’t make the trip. The “final” saw the Lapland (Sapmi) team destroying Monaco 21-1. Hosts Occitania won their third-place game by default. All in all, not an auspicious start for what should have been a very interesting tournament.
