The Ball
The Spirit of Football site describes the journey of The Ball from a football pitch in Battersea, London to the site of the World Cup 2002 in Asia. The Ball will be making the long journey again in 2006, beginning in March, and arriving in Germany in time for World Cup 2006.
The idea is that football is a grassroots and democratic game, played by everyone, not just elite athletes. Along the way, The Ball is kicked around by thousands of people in a gesture of sharing and mutual understanding. The site declares it best: “Every four years, some time before a World Cup is about to start, The Ball will make that journey to the Opening Ceremony over land and by sea, enriching the Football World Cup with a symbol that matches the spirit of the Olympic Flame.”
You can watch the entire 2002 journey in short QuickTime clips. But I want to know where I can get a DVD of the whole thing!
