Jeff Connor’s book looks fascinating. He spent a season following East Stirlingshire, who have finished bottom of Scotland’s Third Division for the past four years in a row. Supporting “Britain’s worst football team” is definitely a venture worthy of note here on Runner-Up. I’m going to see about tracking down Mr. Connor to see if he’ll say a few words about his book. Stay tuned.

I did receive a review copy of the book and I did find it very entertaining. However, Mr. Connor never responded to my numerous emails. It is pleasing to note, however, that as of today, East Stirlingshire sits tied for 5th in the Scottish Third Division. With two wins in their first four matches, they’ve already equalled the number of wins they achieved in each of the 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 seasons. After four years in a row of finishing last, maybe this is the year they lift themselves off the bottom? Up the Shire!
Hi there.
Sorry, never received your emails, possibly because house moves etc meant I changed emails. Happy to respond if you want to get in touch.
Best wishes,
Jeff
Great to hear from you, Jeff. But oh dear. I just went to the East Stirlingshire web site and it hasn’t been updated since 2005. It’s showing fixtures against Gretna, who now play in the Scottish Premier League! Sadly, the “under construction” message on the site is even out of date: “The official website of East Stirlingshire F.C., eaststirlingshire.com, is set to be re-launched soon, hopefully, in time for the start of the 2006/07 season.” And oh yeah, the team DID end up finishing last again in 2006-2007. Right now, they’re sitting 7th after 10 games, with four wins. Another bright start. Can the lads bring it home this season? Only time will tell.
